Lets flee to the flea

With summers showing a little mercy, Ahmedabad is ready to rock once again. The heat wave last month brought the city to a standstill, but the showers last week have brought some relief. Now is a great time to get out and enjoy the many social events the city is famous for. The D’street flea market is the best place to be this weekend! 

Starting today, till 5^th, you can be a part of this exciting flea-  a lovely urban twist to our own good old mela! Ahmedabad has been famous for melas since a long time. We also have some amazing Gujarati folk songs resonating with gujju love for melas. 'Aa man paacham na mela ma' is one wonderful Gujarati folk song about different people who come to this mela. Man paacham - all sorts of people come to this fair and they get different things to sell. Some come to buy. Whereas some are only spectators. A fair resembles our life! There are different people in the mela like this world we live in, and all bring their own flavour. One of my very favourite navratri special song 'Charr charr maru chakdol chale' is about a ride called chakdol which is popular in melas. Though it is a ride for children,  adults love to croon on the song as much as the little people. Another one is 'Hu to gai ti mele'. OK I am going to stop listing down songs about fairs. 

But I have some amazing memories associated with all of these songs and also melas from my childhood. Infact, all of you must have, isn’t it? What’s better than revisiting some sweet memories from your childhood as you lead your adult life on the go?

Whether you are parents to naughty kids or a college going student, or someone from the life-begins-at-60 club; D'street flea will be the best escape into your childhood- a street taking you down memory lane - to a carefree and young past...

Just as you see different people on the street, there are all sorts of people coming to D'street flea bringing their items. Lets give and take together. Lets indulge in shopping as we make happy memories. Are you bringing something to the flea? As it isn't only about items to be sold or bought, one can even bring happiness or exchange beautiful smiles.

How street smart are you?

What is it that makes people street smart? Do you think you are street smart? So I took up this quiz online and according to it found out that I am really street smart :P

Do these quizzes really decide how smart you are? We all know how so many studies/researches claim that these days EQ – Emotional Quotient is more important to get a job and excel in whatever you do, rather than IQ. Similarly, being street smart solves half of the problems life throws at you, isn’t it?

It is very important to be thoughtful and think of all different scenarios in any given situation to be street smart. Also, if you know what to say, when to say and how to say it; half the battle is won. I think all of this sums up when it comes to being street smart.

Simply being on the street also makes you street smart! Just get out there and see for yourself.  Whether you are an introvert or an ambivert, you should try and meet people from time to time and attend social events. I feel I am an ambivert; I am reluctant to go out at times, but once I try and make it, I usually find myself enjoying. I am sure you would too!

There is one such event in Ahmedabad which will not only hone your social skills as you will get to interact with all different people, but also give you a chance to indulge in some food, fashion and fun as you network with interesting people in the city.

D’Street Flea market is a great place to shop this holiday season. A refreshing change in the hot summer afternoons, this flea ensures lots of enjoyment and new stuff to do.  A tropical island in Ahmedabad

The D’ocean flea market was a successful showdown with stall owners as well as the visitors enjoying themselves. The stall owners made profits while people were thronging to see the interesting stalls lined up. I had fun to beat the heat with some cool fashion and also the amazing oceanic theme of the flea. The Green Pearl party plot was very nicely decorated with synthetic ships, beach and cut outs of beach items like surfboards.  The Hawaiian natives’ cutouts on the sand definitely made you feel like you were on some tropical island.

With fashion, art pieces, food and some awesome new products, I was excited to be at the flea. It was fun to interact with fantabulous stall owners and the eager, fun loving Ahmedabadis. Here are some glimpses-

Rogan Art

Inncrafts had this amazing print on bags and mobile covers called the ‘Rogan Art’. This 300 year old art now prevails in only one family in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said to have gifted US President Obama a wall hanging of this art, which he has displayed in the White House.

Tathya is a famous brand for kurtis – they had a very nice collection.

Handy Mandy Creations by Preeti Panchal was a wonderful stall with unique handmade home décor items.

Prason Chakraborty from Mumbai had some awesome coasters and sketches on display.

Prachi Talreja is one of my favourites. She had her wonderful collection of apparels in tow.

Inshape – a very interesting product, it is a detox powder which needs to be consumed like a juice by adding water. It helps you detox your system, thereby aiding weight loss in a completely natural and easy way. I tried it and surprisingly it even tasted good!

Zoci Voci is this fun brand selling personalized lamps. This stall lighted up at night and was quite the centre of attraction.

          

                                       

TeaZahn by Hinesh Kotecha is an awe inspiring concept – they sell luxury green teas and white teas with some wonderful brewing products which they have created by themselves.

This kettle with the little candle brewing the tea tenderly is my favourite.

Dhruvit Zaveri from CEPT wowed the audience (and me too) with a new musical instrument that he has invented by himself! The ‘Pip-o-phone’ is a derivative of alto saxophone. It has this sweet sound which mesmerizes you each time you hear it. He also teaches people to play this instrument, while naming this initiative ‘Kund’.
